PS VITA Hardware

PS VITA Specifications

PS VITA Hardware

The device features a "super oval"-shape similar to the design of the original PlayStation Portable, with a 5-inch (130 mm) OLED capacitive touchscreen in the center of the device. The device features two analog sticks (unlike the PSP which features only a single analog "nub"), a D-pad, a set of standard PlayStation face buttons (Triangle, Circle, Cross and Square), two shoulder buttons (L and R), a PlayStation button and Start and Select buttons. Internally, the device features a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 core processor (3 of the 4 cores will be usable for applications) and a SGX543MP4+ graphics processing unit. The device also features a rear touch pad, a front camera, a rear camera, stereo speakers, microphone, Sixaxis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer), three-axis electronic compass, built-in GPS (only for the 3G version) as well as Wi-Fi, 3G, and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR connectivity. The two cameras feature the abilities of face detection, head detection, and head tracking. It also allows for customization and personalization.

The PlayStation Vita will be released as two different versions: one with 3G support, and a cheaper version without 3G support. The more expensive 3G-version will also come pre-loaded with some special applications that take advantage of 3G's "always-on" capabilities, such as augmented reality software. The 3G service will be partnered with AT&T in the US.

Unlike the PSP, the PlayStation Vita will not support video output or contain a removable battery. PS Vita is equipped with the storage media slot in addition to the new game medium slot, so that users can choose what memory capacity they want depending on their use.

PS VITA NVG Card

Software for the PlayStation Vita will be distributed on NVG Cards, a new proprietary flash card format similar to the Nintendo 3DS Game Cards, rather than on Universal Media Discs (UMDs) used by the original PlayStation Portable. Vita game cards will be available in 2 GB and 4 GB sizes. 5-10% of the writeable space will be reserved for save data, patches, etc. Size and outlook of the card itself are very similar to SD Cards.

PS VITA 2011 E3

PS VITA 2011 E3: Just moments ago during our 2011 E3 press conference we proudly unveiled an incredible 2011 software lineup and amazing new PS3 peripherals, and also shed new light on our highly anticipated handheld gaming device, officially named PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). “Vita,” which means “Life” in Latin, was chosen as the name for our next-generation portable entertainment system because it enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context.

By blurring the lines between interactive entertainment and reality, our goal was to design a device that offered a revolutionary combination of rich gaming capabilities and social connectivity, bringing users closer to each other and closer to their gaming experiences wherever they are. Connectivity was a key objective and our goal was to create experiences and content that would challenge the traditional notions of gaming. It was vital to make a device that was an extension of a user’s entertainment world, no matter where one would go.

PS VITA

PS VITA: This January, Sony debuted its new gaming handheld in Tokyo. The portable's codename was introduced as NGP, or "Next Generation Portable". Today, at the E3 gaming expo in Los Angeles, Sony revealed the handheld's final name, PS VITA, as well as its pricing. The portable has dual touch pads, dual cameras, an OLED screen, GPS, six-axis motion sensors and a three-axis electronic compass. The portable's model number is PCH-1000; the current gen PSP's is PSP-3000.

"Vita means life," said Sony Computer Entertainment Kazuo Hirai, adding that the Vita will "blur the lines" between entertainment and real life, allowing you to connect and interact like never before.

PS Vita owners can get online at any of the over 24,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots across the U.S. As previewed earlier this year in Tokyo, the PS Vita has a feature called "Near" that allows them to find out what other PS Vita owners in the vicinity are currently playing and what titles are popular.

Vita, pronounced "VEE-ta", will have Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi models. Sony is partnering with AT&T as the exclusive mobile carrier for the United States—an announcement that drew groans from the audience at E3. The PlayStation Vita Wi-Fi model is priced at US$249, and the 3G/Wi-Fi model is $299. Additional details about AT&T data plans and pricing will be announced later. Likewise, plans for the PS Vita's carriers outside the U.S. will be made public at a later date. In Japan, the Wi-Fi model is priced at ¥24,980, and it's €249 in Europe. The 3G/Wi-Fi model is ¥29,980 and €299. The PS Vita will successively launch in the global market at the end of 2011.
